Heritage Tourism Specialist
Siobhán O'Mahony
16 years documenting Ireland's rural heritage, thatched villages, and authentic countryside experiences across Limerick's historic landscapes
The Person Behind the Stories
Siobhán's journey into heritage tourism didn't start in an office—it started in University College Cork's archives, where she became fascinated by the stories embedded in Ireland's architectural fabric. She completed her degree in Irish Studies in 2008, then spent three years as a research assistant with the Irish Vernacular Architecture Society, documenting traditional buildings across County Limerick and County Kerry. This hands-on work shaped everything about how she approaches her writing today.
Her breakthrough came in 2011. A feature article on Adare's thatched cottages was published in a national heritage journal, and suddenly she wasn't just researching these places—she was being asked to tell their stories to a wider audience. Since then, she's published over 200 articles on countryside experiences, village tourism, and landscape conservation. But numbers don't capture what actually drives her work.
What matters to Siobhán is authenticity. She doesn't write about rural Ireland from a desk—she walks the Maigue river valleys in different seasons, sits with farmers and locals, and spends weeks documenting how these landscapes actually change and live. She believes that authentic rural experiences shouldn't be commodified or turned into something they're not. Her writing reveals the genuine character of places, the real rhythms of village life, and why these communities matter beyond tourism statistics.

"Authentic rural experiences shouldn't be commodified or sanitised. My work is about revealing the genuine character of places—the real rhythms of village life, the seasonal patterns of river valleys, and why these communities matter beyond tourism statistics. When you spend weeks walking the same landscape in different seasons, interviewing locals, and documenting how things actually change, you stop seeing places as attractions and start seeing them as living communities with their own stories to tell."
